I Am a Man

Until recent years, the lives and values of the sanitation workers whose 1968 fatefully brought the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to Memphis had been relegated to a seldom heard chorus of history. In collaboration with Running Pony Productions and the Memphis Tourism Foundation, we worked to capture the voices of the courageous men and women who united in the face of injustice and racism.

A companion website, currently being updated, features extended oral history interviews with participants.

“I Am a Man” received four Emmy Awards for writing, overall excellence, technical excellence and music. The project continues to air on PBS stations nationwide and has become a part of official school curriculums.
